A tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico could become a named storm in the next 48 hours. The National Hurricane Center says there is an 80-percent chance the disturbance could become Tropical Storm Bill today or Tuesday.
Surface winds were reported at 35 miles-per-hour and waves 16 feet high in the south-central Gulf of Mexico. Tropical storms are identified by winds speeds between 39 and 74 miles-per-hour.
The storm could reach the coasts of Texas and Louisiana tonight.
Houston is under a flash-flood watch tonight and could get four to eight inches of rain. The rain is expected to be out of the area by Thursday or Friday.
Authorities in Port Bolivar have issued a voluntary evacuation order for Bolivar Peninsula ahead of the storm.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says thunderstorm activity continues to become better organized this afternoon, and the low will very likely become a tropical storm this afternoon or this evening.
